How to become a pilot?

Question by : How to become a pilot?
So I have bounced around ideas for a career but I’ve always thought being a pilot is something I would really love. I’m wondering, what would be good to study in college? I was thinking a bachelors of science with emphasis in aviation? Any better recommendations? My dream would be to fly for united some day. How long would it take? I’m guesstimating 10 years? Besides getting my bachelors, what else is required? I read, private pilot license, first class medical certificate, instrument rating and commercial certificate. Will I be able to take out student loans to get through everything I need in order to become a pilot? One more thing, i am a female. And i know it shouldnt be this way, but will it be harder to get a job since there are very few female pilots? So many questions, I hope you can help with answers!! Thanks!

1 way would be to join the air force. They will give you all the schooling and training and a good reputation for further advancement when you get out.

  1. “what would be good to study in college?”
    – Anything that you wouldn’t mind doing for a living. Airlines usually do not require any specific degree. Choose something that you find interesting.

“My dream would be to fly for united some day. How long would it take?”
According to present information, about 10 years is correct.
There is no guarantee you will ever make it though, have that in mind.

“Besides getting my bachelors, what else is required?”
For United, an ATP certificate with several thousands of hours of flight time.
For a beginner pilot job (civilian flight instructor) you’d need a CPL (ME/IR) with an instructor rating.

“Will I be able to take out student loans?”
    – That depends on your financial record and ability.

“will it be harder to get a job since there are very few female pilots”
    – Absolutely not.

Wish you luck, but make sure you first research every bit inside out before you plunge into the whole caboodle.
